WESTFORD — Multiple 911 callers reported seeing a vehicle driving erratically, striking two vehicles before driving off South Chelmsford Road and crashing into a tree on Wednesday afternoon.

The Westford Police Department identified the driver as a 74‑year‑old Chelmsford woman who was seriously injured in the crash and was flown by medical helicopter for treatment.

Police and Westford firefighters were dispatched at about 1:10 p.m. Wednesday to the area of 55 S. Chelmsford Road, where the impact from the wreck had knocked down a tree.

As crews made their way to the scene, police said that Westford Public Safety Communications received multiple 911 calls reporting that the vehicle had struck two vehicles at the intersection of Littleton Road and South Chelmsford Road and then continued operating erratically on South Chelmsford Road before leaving the roadway and striking the tree.

Upon arrival, first responders rendered aid immediately, and firefighters determined the woman’s injuries required a MedFlight transport.

South Chelmsford Road remained closed for roughly 90 minutes while officers investigated the crash and Westford Public Works crews worked to remove the fallen tree.

The crash remains under investigation by the Westford Police Patrol and Special Services Divisions.

In a social media post detailing the crash, the Westford Police recognized “the prompt, professional, and coordinated response of the police officers, firefighters, and Public Safety Communications personnel who responded to this stressful incident.”

“Their quick actions, along with the multiple 911 calls from concerned members of the public, helped ensure that emergency resources were rapidly dispatched and aid was provided to the operator,” the post stated.
