LIBERTY – Sullivan County Communications Director Dan Hust delivered the sad news of the Care Center’s closure at Sunset Lake in Liberty, And now residents and staff need a place to go.

“Sullivan County has made the difficult decision, along with the New York State Department of Health, which approved our closure plan, to close the Sullivan County Adult Care Center, which most people know as the care center at Sunset Lake in Liberty,” Hust said. “We have 86 county employees there, and some of them will probably be able to find jobs in county government,” he said sadly. “Then we have 93 current long-term residents who we’ve been working with, the Department of Health and area facilities to find alternate accommodations for them.”

Assembly member Paula Kay wants to help.
“Our first move would be to call the state DOH. find out where there are beds that are available that are appropriate for the type of care that the individual needs.”
For legislator Cat Scott, it’s personal.
“My mom was a resident when the previous legislature announced that they were selling, and I was terrified. It was very disruptive,” she said. “So it’s one of the reasons why I’m so sad about this and about everything that’s happened.”
Scott says the county employees there are hurting too.
“I saw people today who were crying, not for themselves, but because they loved their jobs and because they wanted to make sure that their residents were okay. These are very dedicated people.”
