President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he is nominating Dr. Heidi Overton to serve as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, selecting a physician and former White House fellow who has worked closely with senior health officials on the administration’s Make America Healthy Again agenda.
Overton would replace Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas, who has been leading the agency following the May resignation of Dr. Marty Makary.
Trump described Overton as a central figure in his administration’s health policy efforts and said she has worked directly with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Dr. Mehmet Oz.
“Today I am honored to nominate the wonderful Dr. Heidi Overton, MD, PhD, as our next FDA Commissioner,” Trump said.
The president praised Overton’s performance in his administration and said her experience tackling difficult health-policy issues made her well suited to lead the federal agency responsible for regulating drugs, medical devices, food and other health-related products.
“Dr. Heidi has been a ROCKSTAR in my Administration, where she has worked directly with Secretary Kennedy, Dr. Oz, and team, to deliver on the MOST TRANSFORMATIVE Health Agenda in History,” Trump said.
“She is known to take on the HARDEST issues, and bring me solutions that work best for the Country. Heidi is ‘ALWAYS RIGHT,’ Secretary Kennedy recently said in the Oval Office! We need her leadership at the FDA now to ensure that the U.S. remains the WORLD LEADER for Scientific Discovery and CURES.”
Overton previously served as a White House fellow during Trump’s first administration.
According to Trump, she is board-certified in public health and general preventive medicine and holds a doctorate in clinical investigations from Johns Hopkins University.
“Dr. Overton was a prestigious White House Fellow in my First Term, is a Board-Certified Physician in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine, and holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Investigations from the Johns Hopkins University. She is SMART and RESPECTED by all!” Trump said.
Her nomination places another official aligned with the administration’s MAHA initiative in a prominent federal health-policy position.
Trump said Overton would work alongside Kennedy and Oz on several priorities, including accelerating access to medical treatments, encouraging domestic innovation, changing the clinical-trial system and reducing prescription drug costs.
“Dr. Heidi will work with Secretary Kennedy and Dr. Oz to RAPIDLY deliver on my priorities of FASTER Cures, INCREASED American Innovation, MAJOR Clinical Trial Reforms, LOWER Drug Prices, and even more MAHA WINS!” Trump said.
The nomination follows a leadership transition at the FDA after Makary resigned as commissioner in May.
Diamantas has served as acting commissioner since Makary’s departure, while the administration continued implementing its broader health agenda.
The FDA commissioner holds a central role in federal health policy, overseeing decisions involving the approval and regulation of pharmaceuticals, vaccines, medical devices and other products under the agency’s jurisdiction.
Trump indicated that Overton’s tenure, if confirmed, would focus heavily on speeding medical innovation while advancing the administration’s efforts to lower costs and reshape federal health policy.
“Dr. Overton will continue putting AMERICA FIRST, and creating a HEALTHY AMERICA. Congratulations to Dr. Heidi Overton! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” Trump concluded.
