MONTICELLO – The Sullivan Fresh Farmers Market was held on Thursday at the Ted Stroebele Recreation Center on Jefferson Street in Monticello, where organizers from Cornell Cooperative Extension brought fresh local produce, meats, honey, and dairy directly to downtown.
Because many people do not know how to prepare fresh produce, there was a cooking demonstration led by chef Dana Halprin.
“A lot of people may have grown up with convenient foods, fast food, or from a can, and that gives a little preconceived notion that they might not like produce because they’re used to it being canned and overcooked and not fresh,” Halprin said.
She made a simple and easy-to-make cucumber recipe.
“Today I’m making a sesame cucumber salad,” she said. “I just hope to show people a recipe that’s quick and very easy to make.”
She is passionate about the benefits of fresh fruits and vegetables, and she believes people should be confident using them in the kitchen.
“I believe that food should be accessible to everybody,” Halprin concluded.
