DEVENS — State Sen. John Cronin, D-Fitchburg, recently announced that international medical manufacturer SMC, of Devens, has received a $1,250,000 grant.
The Massachusetts Office of Business Development grant funds come from the Business Builds Capital Grant Program which is a result of the Mass Leads Act, which Cronin helped pass in 2024. The grant program is a competitive funding initiative created to provide support for-profit business expansion and private investment across the state.
“This grant allows SMC to continue its investment and growth in Devens,” Cronin said. “Devens has become one of the manufacturing hubs in Massachusetts, creating new jobs and stimulating economic development in the region. This investment is crucial to keep workers in North Central, and ensures the state remains a leader in advanced manufacturing and life sciences.”
SMC is an established medical contract manufacturer and pharma services company that works with healthcare companies to deliver top of the line medical products, with seven locations based in the U.S. as well as Costa Rica, India, and the UK. It opened its Massachusetts facility in Devens in 2017, a critical piece of the village’s innovation economy.
The Business Builds Capital Grant Program is designed to support business expansion within the commonwealth, encourage climate-friendly spending that will allow businesses like SMC to expand its operations and increase jobs for residents in rural areas like Devens and attract people to live and work there. The grant program supports businesses like SMC that are making significant long-term investments in Massachusetts and helping them to build and grow by providing them with significant reimbursement grants.
