Pittsburgh Pirates rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin is only 20 years old. He has dealt with two different IL stints this season. Griffin has already made one rehab stint this season with the Double-A Altoona Curve for a game against the Reading Fighting Phils (Philadelphia Phillies affiliate) against Philadelphia’s top pitching prospect RHP Gage Wood.

Aiden Gonzales of espn.com wrote about when Griffin could return to the Pirates this season. He said,

“Griffin, out since July 5 with a torn sagittal band in his left ring finger, has been participating in some light baseball activities while in a splint, with the hope of ramping up to return to shortstop at some point in early- to mid-September.”

The Pirates this season have a 58-62 record. Pittsburgh is going to be missing the playoffs for another season most likely and have not made it since 2015. Outfielder O’Neil Cruz is currently injured and is on a rehab assignment with the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians. Cruz could be back soon with the Pirates. If Pittsburgh was smart, they might be better off shutting down Griffin for the remainder of the season because he is one of the core pieces for the long-term along with Esmerlyn Valdez and Paul Skenes here.
