GROTON — Four people were injured on Wednesday afternoon after an electric vehicle crashed and burst into flames on Gay Road.

Two people were flown by medical helicopter — one to Lahey Hospital & Medical Center in Burlington after first being taken to Lowell General Hospital by the Westford Fire Department, and the other was flown directly to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, according to a joint press release from the Groton Police and Fire departments.

A third patient was transported by the Townsend Fire Department to UMass Memorial, while the fourth was taken by the Littleton Fire Department to Emerson Hospital in Concord.

The release said that the crash was reported at about 12:20 p.m. in the area of 67 Gay Road. When firefighters arrived, they found the electric vehicle on fire, with all four occupants already out of the car.

Because of the nature of the fire, crews launched extensive suppression operations and remained on scene afterward to monitor the vehicle and ensure it did not rekindle. Massachusetts State HazMat also responded to assess air quality around the crash site.

The Pepperell, Westford, Littleton and Townsend fire departments provided mutual aid at the scene, while the Ayer Fire Department supplied advanced life support and station coverage.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Groton Police.

Christopher’s Towing, which is certified in electric vehicle transport and recovery, removed the vehicle from the scene.
