New shows opened in Lowell during Eye on Art’s vacation week.

Illuminations, featuring the work of Elizabeth Sheehan, is featured in the Arts League of Lowell’s Greenwald Gallery, 307 Market St., through Aug. 23. Gallery hours are Wednesday-Sunday, noon-4 p.m. Visit https://artsleagueoflowell.org for info.

If it’s August, it’s time for quilts at the Brush Gallery and Studios, 256 Market St. in Lowell. This year it’s Out of the Blue, a show featuring all manner of blue-hued quilts. It’s on now through Sept. 12, and an artist reception is next Saturday, Aug.15, from 2-4 p.m.

“We challenged quilters to show us their best blue quilts. They shared the results from their inspirations: the forest, the sky, the ocean, flora and fauna, all stitched together using organic and geometric shapes,” notes the press release.

Guest curator is quilter Mary Walter who for over 35 years, has been recognized for her original quilting style, often incorporating a mix of traditional, ethnic, and contemporary quilting techniques into her quilts. She is also a freelance curator presenting exhibits for a variety of cultural organizations nationwide. Walter also teaches in her studio designing patterns and fabric, meeting, and teaching on Zoom, traveling to exhibits, lecturing, and judging quilts. She is a member of Quilters Connection, The Cambridge Modern Quilt Guild, SAQA-Studio Art Quilts Association, and NACQJ – National Association of Certified Quilt Judges.

Guest juror is Valerie Maser-Flanagan who uses self-created hand-dyed fabric to design abstract sewn constructions. Her work is influenced by both the rural setting she currently resides in, her exposure to urban structures from working in Boston for thirty years, and her attraction to ethnic design. Maser-Flanagan has exhibited throughout the United States and received numerous awards for her work. Maser-Flanagan began as a traditional quilter but transitioned to contemporary design through studies with Nancy Crow, David Hornung and Carol Soderlund.

The exhibit includes work by: Betsy Abbott, North Andover, Audrey Augun, Hollis, N.H.; Nancy Crasco, Brighton; Ellen Fisher, Hollis, N.H.; Cindy Warren Lewis, West Newton; Kristine Lundblad, Framingham; Stephanie Shore, Lexington, Leslie Vieth, Westford, and Sherry Winkelman, Winchester. Other artists from Connecticut, New York, western Massachusetts, and Missouri also participated.
