KINGSTON – The Kingston Common Council voted Tuesday evening to establish a traffic-calming capital fund to enhance public safety and discourage dangerous driving.

In 2024, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed bills to authorize the Automated School Speed Enforcement Program, and last year the Common Council passed a resolution to authorize that program in Kingston.

The local lawmakers voted Tuesday to allocate $200,000 generated from the Automated School Speed Enforcement Program that maintains funds generated by program be used for the traffic -calming fund in 2027.

Money used from that capital fund could be used for pedestrian safety and crosswalk enhancements. Other uses include traffic signal replacement and modernization and for other traffic control devices.

In a pair of separate resolutions, the common council voted to fund improvements to the Albert Brown Community Center. In the first resolution, the common council voted to authorize a $450,000 bond ordinance for a grant match related to a $3 million state grant.

In the second resolution, the council authorized the issuance of the $450, 000 bond for the improvement project at the community center, with a cost that should not exceed $3.75 million.
