The Boston Red Sox gutted the farm system in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles on Monday afternoon. After acquiring catcher Adley Rutschman, the Red Sox organization traded away prospects, Anthony Eyason (RHP), Kyson Witherspoon (RHP), and Enddy Azocar (OF). They were the second-ranked, fourth-ranked, and fifth-ranked prospects in the Red Sox farm system.

Now, Eyason is first-ranked in the Orioles system, Witherspoon is seventh-ranked in the Orioles system, and Azocar is eight-ranked in the Orioles system. With Baltimore’s farm system changing after this trade, so did Boston’s. The new second-ranked prospect in the Red Sox’s farm system is outfielder Justin Gonzales.

Gonzales is currently with the Greenville Drive in High-A. He is only 19 years old and signed with the Red Sox organization on January 15, 2024. Gonzales is a right-handed bat and also throws right-handed as well. Gonzales is also projected to reach the MLB in 2028. Gonzales is 6’5″ and weighs 210 lbs.

In 79 games played this season with Greenville, he has a .265 batting average with 15 home runs and 46 RBIs, along with eight stolen bases. His on-base percentage is .388.

Some of the scouting report on MLB.com for him is as follows,

“Gonzales has some of the best bat-to-ball skills and perhaps the most raw power in the system, and the next step will be getting him to tap into the latter. His bat speed and considerable strength generate huge exit velocities, but he homered just four times in 2025 because he had the 11th-worst groundball rate (57 percent) in the Minors. If he can improve the path of his right-handed swing and curb his pull-happy tendencies, reducing his rolled-over grounders and driving the ball in the air more frequently, he could produce 30 or more homers per season.

More athletic and agile than most players his size, Gonzales can flash average speed once he gets going and steal an occasional base, though he may slow a bit as he continues to mature physically. He played most of his debut at first base but spent all of 2025 shuttling between all three outfield positions. While he was better than would be expected in center field, he fits better on a corner and still has the arm strength that produced mid-90s fastballs when he pitched as an amateur. One of Boston’s most gifted position prospects also has outstanding makeup, yet he comes with a huge amount of variance — a ceiling as an All-Star right fielder and a floor as a hit-over-power first baseman.”

There is a chance that Gonzales plays the entire season with the Drive. To begin the 2027 minor league baseball season, there is a very good chance that he is not with Greenville, and he begins the season in Double-A with the Portland Sea Dogs.
