STERLING — From horse and oxen pulls to fireworks, live entertainment and agricultural exhibits, the Sterling Fair will celebrate its 45th edition when it returns Friday, Sept. 11 through Sunday, Sept. 13, at Sterling Airport, 121 Greenland Road.
The two-and-a-half-day community tradition will once again offer free admission and free parking while showcasing the area’s agricultural heritage with activities and entertainment for all ages.
New this year, visitors can learn about creating pollinator-friendly landscapes during presentations by Lady Fern Farm on Saturday at noon and 4 p.m. On Sunday at noon, Reimagined Roots will present a program on reducing food waste through backyard composting.
Returning attractions include horse and oxen pulls, the Dale Perkins Horse Show, herding dog demonstrations, a farmer’s market, livestock shows, tractor pulls, frog jumping contests, the Gillette Midway, exhibit hall, food and craft vendors, fireworks, and live entertainment throughout the weekend.
“This year marks the 45th edition of the revived Sterling Fair,” said Sterling Fair Committee Chairperson Doug Downey. “While rumors continue to swirl about the Sterling Airport property, the Fair Committee focused on planning throughout the year and is prepared for another successful fair.”
Downey said volunteers remained committed despite weather challenges during last year’s event.
“This year we will unveil our new bleachers that were obtained with a Destination Development Grant from the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism,” he said. “As always, we can use more people, especially the week leading up to and the weekend of the fair.”
The Sterling Fair, which was revived in 1981 and paused only during the COVID-19 pandemic, continues to rely on volunteers and community support. Organizers encourage residents to volunteer and to purchase commemorative fair buttons, T-shirts or new Sterling Fair hats to help support the annual event.
