MAPLECREST – A 12-year-old child was killed, and another child was critically injured after a utility terrain vehicle carrying four youths overturned on a private driveway in Greene County, authorities said.

The crash occurred near 84 County Route 56 in Maplecrest, according to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.

A preliminary investigation found that the UTV was traveling on a private gravel driveway serving several homes when it veered off the left side of the roadway, struck a boulder and rolled onto its passenger side, ejecting all four occupants.

Authorities said the UTV was occupied by four youths ranging in age from 10 to 14. None were wearing seat belts or helmets.

The 12-year-old and 10-year-old, who were seated on the passenger side of the vehicle, became pinned beneath the overturned UTV. A nearby resident used a truck to lift the vehicle off the children before emergency responders arrived.

Both children were airlifted to Albany Medical Center. The 12-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital. The 10-year-old remained in critical condition.

The 14-year-old driver and an 11-year-old passenger suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash.
