MONSEY- State Senator Bill Weber has introduced legislation to rename a portion of New York State Route 306 in the Town of Ramapo in honor of the late Chief Hugh (Chaim) Jacobson, a longtime volunteer firefighter and first assistant chief with the Monsey Fire Department.
The proposal would designate the roadway as the Chief Hugh (Chaim) Jacobson Memorial Highway, recognizing Jacobson’s nearly three decades of volunteer service to the Monsey community.
Weber shared news of the legislation with Jacobson’s wife, children, and other family members, offering what he described as a lasting tribute to Jacobson’s dedication and service.
Jacobson, who died after a lengthy illness at age 46, served 28 years with the Monsey Fire Department’s Brewer Fire Engine Company No. 1. Following in his father’s footsteps, he rose through the ranks from lieutenant to captain and eventually chief, earning the respect of fellow firefighters and emergency responders throughout Rockland County.
Known by the radio designation “7-2,” Jacobson was credited with helping improve firefighter training, safety initiatives, and department operations while responding to countless emergencies during his years of service.
“Chief Hugh Jacobson embodied the very best of public service,” Weber said. “For nearly 30 years, he answered the call whenever his community needed him, asking for nothing in return.”
Jacobson’s funeral drew hundreds of mourners, including firefighters, EMS personnel, law enforcement officers, elected officials, and community members from across Rockland County.
If approved by the State Legislature and signed into law, the designation would create a permanent memorial honoring Jacobson’s legacy of service, leadership, and commitment to the Monsey community.
