CARMEL- Carmel Police Saturday identified the man accused of stabbing a U.S. postal employee at the Carmel Post Office last Thursday afternoon as a 38-year-old resident of Rockland County.
Carmel PD Public Information Officer Sgt. Erin Macon said Howard McNiff of Nanuet was charged with attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon, and was remanded to the Putnam Correctional Facility without bail.
Macom also released additional details about the attack.
Around 3 p.m., McNiff entered the post office on Fair Street, across from Carmel High School, armed with a knife and repeatedly stabbed the 61-year-old Carmel postal employee in the upper torso.
Macon said another postal worker who tried to intervene suffered a laceration to his arm.
Following several 9-1-1 calls, a sheriff’s deputy who was in the immediate area observed McNiff and deployed a Taser on the suspect who according to police was still chasing the victim.
McNiff fell to the ground and was taken into custody.
The postal worker who was not identified was treated at Putnam Hospital Center for non- life-threatening injuries while the second employee declined medical treatment at the scene.
Macon described the incident as “isolated,” and did not divulge if McNiff knew his victim or why he was in Carmel or had entered the post office.
