MONTICELLO – A house fire in Monticello early Tuesday afternoon claimed the life of an occupant on Terrace Drive in the Melody Lake development.

While firefighters were extinguishing the blaze, they began searching for any potential victims and a short time later, it was confirmed by a family member that one occupant was still inside.

The fire was brought under control in 30 minutes.

Officials said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Mutual aid was provided by the Bethel FAST team, and fire departments from Rock Hil, Liberty, Port Jervis, Fallsburg and Woodridge.

Also assisting at the scene were emergency medical service personnel from Empress Ambulance, Sullivan County, Bethel, and the Sullivan County Bureau of Fire Investigation, Sheriff’s Office and County Coroner’s Office.
