Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day is filled with anticipation and excitement, but your favorite film critic right here is not going to spoil it for anybody. Please be advised, if you haven’t seen No Way Home yet, please do not watch this to avoid jumping into spoilers. This all-new sequel takes place sometime after the events of No Way Home and reintroduces Peter Parker, who spends his days fighting crime as a full-time Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him. However, the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him sparks a change in Peter that he may not be able to control. But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves – a powerful villain no one can even see.

Returning actor Tom Holland continues his journey as our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, a former Avenger who received spider-like abilities after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Following Dr. Strange’s spell at the end of the previous film, the world has forgotten that Peter Parker exists, and he is currently focusing on serving and protecting New York City from dangerous threats and street-level crime while keeping his superhero identity a secret from everyone. As an actor, Holland is the centerpiece of the storyline and shines the spotlight as usual. Likewise, his character struggles to balance his life between being a normal civilian and a superhero.

What is lovable is Peter’s changeable character development when it comes to handling villainy. Instead of destroying them, his good-hearted personality forced him to make decisions for himself, supporting the words, “With great power comes great responsibility.” What is tearful to watch is Peter trying to reconnect with his friends, especially MJ. The returning MCU cast – consisting of Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo –  provides more depth and much stronger enrichment. Newcomers Sadie Sink (The Whale) and Tramell Tillman (Apple TV’s Severance) are also served as welcoming additions for Spider-Man fans and audiences.

Spider-Man: No Way Home was originally meant to end the MCU Spider-Man trilogy, but the filmmakers and cast decided to continue the Spider-Man journey. The Spider-Man character is based on the Marvel comics by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Jon Watts, the director of the first three MCU Spider-Man films, was set to return as director of this sequel, but ultimately left the project to take a break from directing superhero movies. His directing job eventually passed on to Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed MCU’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in 2021, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Chris McKenna and Eric Sommers return to write the script, while Kevin Feige returns as one of the producers.

This story is rousing entertainment. Since this is a Marvel superhero movie, my role as a film critic is to avoid giving away spoilers. Obviously, there is much more to talk about for this movie, but you need to come and see for yourself once it gets released. The action sequences and the visuals are the huge standouts, with Cretton following the same formula from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The cinematography from Cretton’s collaborator Brett Pawlak is breathtaking, while Michael Giacchino’s score also continues to spread the Spider-Man magic all over in the film’s background. The scenes with Peter, Hulk, and Punisher are exhilarating, well-crafted, and beautifully executed. And the comedy timing coming from those characters is hilarious.

I haven’t read the 2008 comic book but I know this movie is about to get big thanks to the filmmaking team. Tom Holland delivers the Spider-Man energy in this anticipated superhero plotline of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It is great, but to me, Spider-Man: No Way Home will always be, without a doubt, one of the best MCU Spider-Man films of all time, and I believe every main cast member arguably gives their best performance in this movie. The film’s visual effects are my favorite part, which may become one of the nominees for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects in 2026, but we will see about that. This movie is a must, especially for die-hard Spider-Man fans, and it’s the best way to enjoy the end of summer. It runs about 145 minutes, but you will not feel it as time goes by. I can’t wait to see the future of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man installments and appearances. If you notice, the Spider-Man team was already planning on working on a new Spider-Man trilogy, with this being the first film.
