A teacher at Belmont Middle School has been charged with possession of child pornography, according to the Mass State Police.

Leon Dyer, 45 was arrested by officers from MSP and Belmont Police Department on Saturday, the State Police said in a statement.

He is expected to be arraigned at Cambridge District Court Monday on two counts of possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material.

Belmont Public Schools Superintendent Jill Geiser wrote in a letter shared with community members Sunday that she and the school were aware of the charges against Dyer.

Dyer was still listed in the Belmont Middle School staff directory in the “technology education” department, but Geiser wrote that he is no longer allowed on the premises and his school technology accounts have been disabled.

“Our primary concern, as always, is the wellbeing and safety of students,” Geiser wrote. “We have no information at this time to suggest that this individual engaged in any inappropriate conduct with BPS students, on BPS property, or otherwise in connection with his employment with BPS.”

She also noted that he had passed Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) system checks and Statewide Automated Fingerprint Identification System (SAFIS) checks.

“We will continue to work with the Massachusetts State Police, the Belmont Police Department, and any related legal personnel, committing our full cooperation,” Geiser wrote. “We will remain vigilant, as always, about ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all students and transparency with the community.”

In addition to teaching, the MSP said that Dyer also worked at a camp in Middleboro.

“For parents seeking further resources, you’re encouraged to reach out to the Middlesex Child Advocacy Center,” the MSP statement said.

The department said that they are still actively investigating the case and could not provide anymore information at this time.
