GROTON — From neighborhood baseball games and fishing trips to carefree afternoons at the swimming hole, Norman Rockwell’s paintings have long captured the simple pleasures and enduring spirit of American life.

The community is invited to take a closer look at those beloved images during the virtual presentation “As American as Apple Pie: Rockwell’s Images of Sports and Leisure,” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 30, via Zoom.

Presented by Culturally Curious in partnership with the Chelmsford Public Library, the program explores how Rockwell celebrated everyday recreation while reflecting American ideals of community, fair play and optimism. Participants will examine both his iconic Saturday Evening Post covers and lesser-known works, discovering the artistry and storytelling that made him one of America’s most beloved illustrators.

The presentation will be led by art historian Jane Oneail, who holds master’s degrees from Boston University and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. A longtime museum educator, she has served in leadership roles at the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen and the Currier Museum of Art and has taught art history at the college level for more than a decade.

Oneail believes Rockwell’s work continues to resonate because it offers much more than nostalgic Americana.

“Rockwell’s artwork is charming and humorous, but there’s often a lot more to his images than a quick glance reveals,” she said. “He was well-trained and studied the Old Masters and one of the most technically skilled visual storytellers America has ever known. People will enjoy seeing some of Rockwell’s most famous works in a new light and discovering some of his lesser-known paintings along the way.”

The program is made possible in part by the Groton Public Library Endowment Trust. The webinar will be recorded, and all registered participants will receive a link to the recording within 48 hours of the event.

Registration is required through the Groton Public Library calendar at gpl.org. A Zoom link will be emailed to participants after they register. For more information about Culturally Curious, visit iamculturallycurious.com.
