President Donald Trump has recently shifted toward Vice President JD Vance as his preferred political heir, according to a report citing five people familiar with his private comments, though allies of both Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio dispute claims of a serious rivalry.

President Donald Trump increasingly sees Vice President JD Vance as the most likely person to carry his political movement into the 2028 presidential election, according to a report on Trump’s recent discussions about the future of the Republican Party.
Trump had previously spoken about both Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as possible successors, at times asking aides and donors for their opinions without publicly favoring either man. That dynamic has reportedly changed in recent weeks.
“For months, Trump treated Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as something like rival contestants, polling aides and donors on the two men and floating each as a possible heir without tipping his hand,” the report stated. “In recent weeks, that has stopped, according to five people familiar with the president’s running commentary on the race to succeed him in 2028.”
Vance’s recent public appearances reportedly helped strengthen Trump’s confidence in the vice president. During a book tour, Vance participated in interviews with the hosts of The View, Bill Maher, Megyn Kelly and several Fox News personalities.
Trump was also said to be pleased with Vance’s recent weight loss and his leadership of an administration task force focused on fraud.
Whether Trump ever viewed Vance and Rubio as genuine competitors remains disputed. Supporters of both men have argued that reports of a succession battle exaggerated the relationship between them.
“Whether Trump was ever really weighing Vance against Rubio is itself contested,” the report stated. “Camps for both men have insisted that any rivalry between the two has been overblown and that Trump has historically enjoyed keeping potential successors competing for his favor rather than settling on one.”
Rubio has repeatedly said he would not run against Vance if the vice president seeks the Republican presidential nomination in 2028. That position could prevent a divisive primary contest between two prominent members of the Trump administration.
At 55, Rubio would also remain young enough to pursue the presidency in a later election. One possible political path would involve serving as Vance’s vice president before mounting his own presidential campaign.
Both men have developed strong standing with Republican voters and remain closely connected to Trump’s administration and political coalition. Vance holds the institutional advantage of serving as vice president, while Rubio has extensive experience in the Senate, presidential politics and foreign policy.
Trump is expected to retain substantial influence over the Republican electorate after leaving office. His endorsement and continued relationship with the party’s voters could play a decisive role in determining the 2028 nominee, regardless of whether Vance, Rubio or another candidate enters the race.
Vance and Rubio have publicly maintained a cooperative relationship, and neither has encouraged speculation about personal hostility between them. Their ability to work together could allow both to pursue future political ambitions without creating an immediate conflict inside the administration.
For now, the reported change in Trump’s private commentary places Vance in the strongest position to emerge as the president’s preferred successor. However, neither Trump nor Vance has formally announced plans for the 2028 election, leaving the Republican succession question unresolved.
