STAATSBURG – Two hikers were rescued Thursday morning after falling from a 15-foot cliff into the Hudson River at Mills-Norrie State Park in Staatsburg. Dutchess County 911 received the report of the fallen hikers at approximately 7:20 a.m., and a Water Emergency Response was initiated, bringing police, fire, EMS, and specialized resources, including divers from the New York State Police, to the area.
Upon arrival, according to Hyde Park Police Chief Robert Benson, his officers located two individuals in distress in the water.
The victims were removed from the water by fire department personnel and transported to the marina by boat. A medevac helicopter had been requested and landed in the field at the entrance to the park.
The two men were treated at the marina by EMS personnel and transported to a local hospital by ambulance, canceling the need for the helicopter.
Both men are reported to be in stable condition.
Agencies participating in the rescue included the Roosevelt Fire Department, New York State Police, Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Park Police, Fairview Fire Department (with a boat), Poughkeepsie Fire Department (with a boat), East Kingston Fire Department (with a boat), Hyde Park Fire Department, West Clinton Fire Department, New York City DEP Aviation Unit, Empress EMS, and LifeNet Air helicopter.
The Dutchess and Ulster County Departments of Emergency Response assisted with inter-agency communications on the call.
