MID-HUDSON – A temperatures rise again into the 90s, municipalities, counties and organizations are opening cooling centers for those who don’t have air conditioners or fans.

Putnam County Commissioner of Emergency Services James Oster reminded the public that older adults were particularly vulnerable to extreme heat since many heat-related illnesses occur indoors where homes may not be adequately cooled.

He urged family members, neighbors, and caregivers to check on seniors at least twice daily; ensure they have access to air conditioning or a cool environment while encouraging them to drink water regularly.

County Executive Kevin Byrne also encouraged residents without access to air conditioning to seek relief in public air-conditioned facilities whenever possible.
