The New York Mets lead all of professional baseball in southpaws from Leominster.
Already developing left-handed pitcher Jonathan Santucci — a 2024 second-round pick — in the minor leagues, the Mets signed undrafted free agent and Leominster native AJ Colarusso on Sunday.
A lefty starter, Colarusso put together a four-year career at Boston College that saw moments of brilliance in his senior season. Prior to pitching at BC, the 6-foot, 205-pound hurler was a four-year varsity player at the Groton School, where he served as a team captain and was named the Independent School League (ISL) Co-Pitcher of the Year as a senior in 2022.
Colarusso went 5-4 in 16 starts for the Eagles this spring. He notched a 4.45 ERA with 77 strikeouts and 24 walks in 83 innings as a senior.
In his collegiate career, Colarusso went 10-19 with 213 strikeouts and a 5.67 ERA in 59 appearances.
The 22-year-old wrapped up his time at Boston College as the program’s all-time leader in starts with 50. Colarusso’s 243 career innings pitched are the fourth most ever by an Eagle, while his 213 are the sixth most in program history.
An ACC All-Academic team selection for the last three seasons, Colarusso was the first member of the 2026 Eagles to sign a professional contract. Outfielder Jack Toomey followed suit, also inking a deal with the Mets.
Colarusso’s younger sister, Giulia, just completed her sophomore season with the Boston College women’s lacrosse team. In 18 games, the midfielder tied for the team lead with 40 goals and added 12 assists for the Eagles.
