WASHINGTON — The District of Columbia’s Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has released preliminary findings regarding the sudden death of U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), concluding that the longtime senator died of natural causes.

According to the preliminary report, Graham suffered a ruptured aorta caused by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Officials said there is no evidence of foul play, trauma, or any criminal activity connected to his death. The investigation remains open pending the completion of standard toxicology testing and the issuance of a final autopsy report.

Graham, who served South Carolina in the U.S. Senate for more than two decades, died unexpectedly Saturday. News of his passing sent shockwaves through Washington, where colleagues from both political parties expressed condolences and reflected on his decades of public service.

The medical examiner’s findings come as speculation spread rapidly across social media following Graham’s death. Various claims and conspiracy theories circulated online within hours of the announcement, with some attempting to connect his death to ongoing geopolitical tensions involving Iran. At this time, authorities have released no evidence supporting those claims, and investigators have stated that the preliminary findings point to a natural medical event.

A ruptured aorta is one of the most serious cardiovascular emergencies and can occur without warning, particularly in individuals with advanced arteriosclerotic disease. Medical experts note that the condition can become fatal within minutes despite immediate medical intervention.

Graham was widely recognized as one of the Senate’s leading voices on national security, military affairs, and foreign policy. Throughout his career, he consistently advocated for a strong U.S. military, robust support for America’s allies, and a hardline approach toward adversarial nations, including Iran, Russia, and China.

President Donald Trump, congressional leaders, and foreign officials have offered tributes honoring Graham’s years of service, describing him as a dedicated public servant who remained deeply committed to American national security and the Constitution.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has indicated that a final report will be issued after routine testing is completed. Until then, officials continue to emphasize that the preliminary investigation has uncovered no evidence suggesting anything other than natural causes.

As Washington mourns one of its most influential foreign policy voices, officials are urging the public to rely on verified information rather than speculation while the medical examiner completes its final review.
