On July 20, 1999, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) launched an unprecedented campaign to eradicate Falun Gong, involving systematic arrests, imprisonment, brainwashing, torture, and forced organ harvesting, as documented by human rights organizations such as Amnesty International, the China Tribunal, and the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The CCP has extended its persecution of Falun Gong beyond China's borders through a transnational repression campaign involving physical assaults, diplomatic pressure, media attacks, and weaponizing the overseas legal systems. "In each Chinese mission overseas there must be at least one official in charge of Falun Gong affairs," former Chinese consul Chen Yonglin testified before Congress, revealing a global network of "more than 1,000 Chinese secret agents and informants" abroad tasked with pursuing this single spiritual community. Since March 2024, the Falun Dafa Information Center has documented more than 302 anonymous death and bomb threats targeting Falun Gong and Shen Yun Performing Arts worldwide (as of June 30, 2026) — 214 aimed at Falun Gong practitioners, 200 at government officials or institutions globally, and 95 at U.S. government officials or institutions alone.

For 27 years, Falun Gong practitioners have continued to counter the persecution through peaceful means — what faluninfo.net calls "the ultimate in nonviolent resistance: resistance, or change, at the level of the soul." Even under this brutality, faith has held: as one practitioner tortured in a Beijing labor camp, Zhao Ming, put it, "the persecution of Falun Gong is completely targeting our belief... but we didn't do anything illegal."

On July 20, 2026, commemorative events will take place around the world. Join the movement by sharing videos, short clips, photos, articles, and posts on Gan Jing World using the hashtag #720 and #July20Rally to raise awareness, defend human rights, and call for an end of the 27 years of persecution.
