President Donald Trump held a press conference Wednesday from the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, as the U.S.-Iran ceasefire and related memorandum of understanding unraveled following a new round of attacks in the Gulf.

Video of Trump’s remarks from Ankara was shared through a YouTube livestream.

The United States launched strikes against Iran after Iranian forces targeted several ships Tuesday in the Strait of Hormuz. The escalation continued Wednesday when Iran struck U.S. military sites in Kuwait and Bahrain, further weakening the ceasefire that had paused open hostilities between Washington and Tehran.

Trump declared the ceasefire “over” during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, saying he no longer believed negotiations with Iran were worthwhile.

“To me, I think it’s over,” Trump said. “I don’t want to deal with them anymore. They’re scum.”

Trump also accused Iranian leaders of dishonesty and violence as he called off the ceasefire and memorandum of understanding.

“They’re sick people. They’re led by sick people, and they’re vicious, violent people… As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a waste of time dealing with them. They’re liars,” Trump said.

The president’s remarks came as the NATO gathering was overshadowed by the escalating U.S.-Iran conflict, with the collapse of the ceasefire raising fresh questions about the future of negotiations and the risk of broader fighting in the region.
