MONGAUP – A 56-year-old Pine Island man drowned when he went fishing in a kayak in a lake at the Mongaup Pond Campground in the Town of Mongaup.

On July 4 at around 8:50 p.m. State Police at Liberty responded to a report of an overturned kayaker.

On July 5, the body of Scott Meyer was found by the Sullivan County Dive Team at the bottom of the lake in approximately 14 feet of water near the area where he was last seen in his kayak. The boat was found about 10 feet from

Police said at this time there is no sign of foul play and the cause of death is believed to be drowning.

State Police were assisted by the Sullivan County Dive Team, Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office, and state forest ranger.
