WAPPINGERS FALLS – A man was shot around 1:45 a.m. Saturday on the Wappingers Creek Bridge in the Village of Wappingers Falls.  Initial accounts indicate that police responded to the area around 1 a.m. for a report of a suicidal man who was threatening to jump from the bridge.

One account says the man turned from the bridge railing, armed with a knife, and began approaching the officers.  Failing to comply with commands to drop the knife, at least one officer discharged his firearm, striking the man.

The man was triaged at the scene and transported to a local hospital for additional treatment.

Law enforcement officials from the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, and New York State Attorney General’s Office were at the scene of the shooting as of 8 a.m.

Route 9D/West Main and East Main Streets is currently closed to vehicular traffic.  Motorists are encouraged to seek alternative routes.
