POUGHKEEPSIE – The Garden Street bridge that spans the Fallkill Creek has reopened after being closed for a year for repairs.  The bridge replacement was announced in 2024, and the project received $894,000 in state funding.  Prior to the state funding, the city received $3.6 million from the federal government toward the $4.6 million project.

The bridge replacement includes a safer bridge and abutments, improves the turning radius of the Garden Street/Brookside Avenue intersection, and repairs crosswalks.  The project has been touted as a long-term investment that will improve safety for vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians alike for the next 50 years.

Final pavement markings, including two crosswalks, a stop bar, and two bicycle sharrows, which indicate that the traffic lane is shared by both bicycles and motor vehicles, will be installed the week of July 6 with minimal short-term traffic impact.
