TOWNSEND — The Townsend Police Department has added some rumble to its patrols.

The department announced on Thursday that they have launched a new motorcycle unit made up of Sgt. Jeffrey Giles, Officer Michael Marchand and Officer Dan Marshall. Giles and Marshall have already completed motorcycle school, while Marchand is set to attend training this fall.

The unit exists thanks to a donated motorcycle from Harbor Auto Body, a Townsend shop known for backing local public‑safety efforts.

The department said in a press release making the announcement that the new ride will help officers maneuver more easily through traffic, respond faster in tight areas and stay highly visible around town.

Townsend Police Chief James Sartell thanked Harbor Auto Body while noting the donation gives the department a tool that is both practical and community‑friendly.

“This motorcycle unit will strengthen our ability to enforce traffic laws, improve roadway safety, and engage with residents in a more visible and approachable way,” Sartell said in the press release. “I’m proud of the officers who have taken on this role and look forward to the positive impact this unit will have in our community.”
