AYER — Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts recently presented its Gold Awards, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, and one Ayer resident was among the recipients.

The Girl Scout Gold Award recognizes girls who identify a community need, develop a sustainable solution, and demonstrate exceptional leadership through a significant service project.

This year, Keziah Salter of Ayer earned this prestigious award through a project that is set to create a lasting impact on the local community.

Salter’s project was called Fort Devens Educational Movement. She recognized that people in the community felt disconnected from the former military base, Fort Devens, and its local history due to a general lack of awareness.

To make this information more accessible, Salter created pamphlets and online materials to educate locals, visitors and students.

Additionally, Salter engaged the community through presentations at schools and events such as Armed Forces Day, which helped foster interest in military history and local heritage. Salter’s efforts connected people to the historical significance of Fort Devens and inspired local middle school students to explore their local history. Salter’s work will be sustained through partnerships with the Fort Devens Museum and local libraries, ensuring their resource will remain available for future use.

“I made the decisions that shaped the project, not only including what the project would say and how it would focus, but also making the decisions about how that content is expressed in the wider world,” Salter said.
