James Van Der Beek’s widow shared a tribute to her late actor husband Sunday on the first Father’s Day since his death.
“Missing you so much and thinking of how magnificent you were in every single way today,” Kimberly Van Der Beek wrote on Instagram. “And somehow, from the other side? You continue to parent. You’re a marvel.”
She backed up those words with a slew of photos of him cuddling, celebrating and roughhousing with their six children from tot to teen. The two married in 2010 and share kids Olivia, 15; Joshua, 14; Annabel, 12; Emilia, 10; Gwendolyn, 8, and Jeremiah, 4.
Comments poured in lionizing the “Dawson’s Creek” star as a model dad who had shown others what fatherhood looks like. One of them came from Mary-Margaret Humes, who played his mother on the hit show, which ran on the WB network from 1998 to 2003.
“Wishing all of the amazing dads throughout this vast universe a Happy Father’s Day weekend,” she wrote, tagging Van Der Beek and John Shipp, who played her husband and Dawson’s dad. “My advice? Give big meaningful hugs and tell them you love them while you still have the chance … a shout-out to simpler times with @vanderjames @johnwesleyshippjr.”
James Van Der Beek played Dawson Leery, the lead character in the teen drama series that followed the fictional lives of close friends in small-town Massachusetts (though it was filmed in Delaware) through high school and college.
He died of colorectal cancer on Feb. 11 at age 48, a little more than a year after announcing his diagnosis in November 2024.
