Rapper Mystikal was sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping a woman in his Louisiana home.
The 55-year-old musician born Michael Tyler is best known for his 2000 single “Shake Ya Ass” featuring Pharrell Williams.
He pleaded guilty to third-degree rape in March. According to Baton Rouge station WBRZ, Mystikal had been accused of beating, choking and robbing a woman in 2022. He allegedly accused the woman of stealing cash from him prior to the attack, then sent himself money from her phone.
His victim reportedly asked a judge to sentence her attacker to a maximum penalty.
“If I did that to you, I deserve the max sentence,” Mystikal reportedly told the court while facing the bench.
He was prohibited from speaking to his accuser directly. Mystikal could’ve received a 25-year prison term. He was initially arrested for first-degree rape. That crime carries a possible life sentence.
His attorney unsuccessfully attempted to withdraw his client’s guilty plea in the days leading up to the Louisiana native’s sentencing. Mystical contended that he hadn’t fully understood the consequences of his plea when it was made.
The defendant was already on a sex offender registration due to a 2004 sexual assault allegation that landed him behind bars for six years.
He talked about serving time for abusing a hairdresser in a 2012 interview with DJ Envy.
“What I did and how I made it is that I took myself out of the loop and I looked out for the guys around me,” he said.
