NASHUA, N.H. — A 41‑year‑old Nashua man was arrested Tuesday after police say he walked into a Citizens Bank branch on Main Street, set a backpack on the counter and demanded the teller put cash inside.
The Nashua Police Department identified the suspect as Mario Monserrate‑Morgan, who allegedly fled out a rear door of the Citizens Bank at 238 Main St. after the robbery, leaving with $645 in cash before being tracked down and detained.
Police said in a case synopsis available in court documents that officers were first called to the bank at about 1 p.m. for a report of an active robbery. Responding units were given a description of a suspect wearing a blue shirt and shorts, carrying a black backpack and with “something like a scarf” covering his face.
An officer located a man matching the suspect’s description — later identified as Monserrate-Morgan — outside 13 E. Pearl St. and he was taken into custody. Police noted a track by K‑9 Oakley also led officers to Monserrate-Morgan’s location on East Pearl Street.
Inside the bank, the teller told police that the suspect placed a backpack on her counter and demanded money, warning her not to activate the alarm. Police said the teller said she initially could not understand the suspect, so he removed his face covering and said something to the effect of, “Put the money in the bag and don’t press any buttons.”
According to police, the teller also told officers she was “in fear for her safety and the safety of those around her,” and feared being shot.
Police noted that Monnserrate-Morgan was unarmed during the alleged crime.
The teller allegedly handed over $645, including $140 in new, sequential two‑dollar bills. Surveillance images reviewed by detectives with the Nashua Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division were sent to officers at the scene, who confirmed Monserrate-Morgan matched the suspect shown on camera.
During booking, police searched Monserrate-Morgan’s backpack and found a cap gun wrapped in a blue T‑shirt, along with the cash. His clothing and backpack matched what was seen on bank surveillance footage.
Monserrate-Morgan is charged with robbery, a Class B felony. He was held on preventive detention ahead of his arraignment that took place on Wednesday afternoon in the 9th Circuit District Division Nashua Court.
According to court documents, Monserrate-Morgan entered no plea and was ordered held without bail.
He is scheduled to return to court next Wednesday.
