International leaders moved swiftly Sunday to welcome the landmark peace agreement announced between President Donald Trump and the Islamic Republic of Iran, hailing the breakthrough as a major step toward ending months of conflict and restoring stability to one of the world’s most strategically important regions.
The agreement, which is expected to be formally signed next week in Switzerland, brings an end to more than three months of military tensions between the United States and Iran and clears the way for the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. The narrow waterway serves as a critical global energy corridor through which roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply passes each year.
The prospect of renewed maritime traffic through the strait immediately sparked positive reactions from governments across Europe, the Middle East, and beyond, with many leaders describing the agreement as a significant diplomatic achievement that could help stabilize both regional security and global energy markets.
Britain Praises Diplomatic Breakthrough
Among the first world leaders to respond was British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who welcomed the agreement and praised the efforts of the United States and international mediators who helped bring both sides to the negotiating table.
In a statement issued Sunday evening, Starmer described the deal as an important milestone toward ending hostilities and restoring stability throughout the Middle East.
“I warmly welcome today’s agreement reached between the United States and Iran,” Starmer said. “This is a hugely important step forward in ending the war, ensuring regional stability, and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.”
The British leader also congratulated President Trump, along with negotiators from Pakistan, Qatar, and other nations that played key roles in facilitating discussions between Washington and Tehran.
“I congratulate President Trump and the mediators from Pakistan, Qatar, and elsewhere who have contributed to this breakthrough. We have long urged de-escalation, and this is the progress we had hoped to see,” Starmer added.
UK Ready to Help Secure Shipping Routes
Starmer emphasized that the United Kingdom stands ready to support efforts to ensure that the Strait of Hormuz remains permanently open and secure.
For months, disruptions in the region have raised concerns about energy supplies, shipping costs, and economic uncertainty affecting countries around the world.
According to Starmer, restoring free navigation through the strait will be critical to easing economic pressures that have been felt globally.
“Our government stands ready to support efforts to ensure the Strait reopens and remains fully and permanently open,” he said. “This will be essential to reducing the severe economic impacts that have affected families here in the UK and around the world.”
The prime minister also noted that Britain and France had previously worked on plans for a multinational maritime security mission designed to protect commercial shipping and clear potential hazards from regional waterways.
He indicated that those resources remain available should they be needed in support of the peace agreement.
Nuclear Concerns Remain a Priority
While celebrating the breakthrough, Starmer stressed that any long-term peace agreement must include strict safeguards regarding Iran’s nuclear activities.
“For any peace to endure, it is essential that the commitments made, particularly in relation to Iran’s nuclear programme, are robust, verifiable, and fully implemented,” Starmer said. “It remains the United Kingdom’s firm and longstanding position that Iran must never possess a nuclear weapon.”
His remarks echoed concerns shared by many Western governments that future negotiations must address not only the current conflict but also broader security issues involving Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Macron Welcomes New Opportunity for Peace
French President Emmanuel Macron also praised the agreement and expressed support for efforts aimed at securing maritime routes and promoting regional stability.
Macron announced that French resources remain prepared to assist in any international mission designed to guarantee the safe and unrestricted passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
“The resumption of maritime traffic, without restriction or toll, is an indispensable condition for regional stability and the global economy,” Macron said.
The French president described the agreement as an opportunity to launch broader diplomatic efforts focused on achieving lasting peace throughout the Middle East.
“This agreement also paves the way for comprehensive negotiations in the service of peace and security for all in the Middle East,” Macron stated.
France Calls for Broader Regional Security Talks
Macron emphasized that future negotiations should address a wide range of security concerns, including Iran’s nuclear activities, ballistic missile program, and regional influence.
“These negotiations must address concerns related to Iran’s nuclear and ballistic programs, as well as its policy of regional destabilization,” he said. “This is how we will be able to build a solid and lasting peace.”
The French leader pledged that France would continue working closely with international partners to support diplomatic efforts and strengthen regional security.
Macron also highlighted the importance of maintaining stability in neighboring Lebanon and reiterated support for efforts to strengthen the authority of the Lebanese government across its territory.
Qatar Celebrates Successful Mediation Efforts
Qatar, which played a significant role in facilitating negotiations, also welcomed the announcement.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani praised the diplomatic efforts that helped bring the agreement to fruition and thanked regional and international partners for their contributions.
“We extend our thanks to our brothers in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and to all regional and international parties who contributed to creating the conditions for reaching this understanding,” he wrote on X.
The Qatari leader expressed hope that upcoming negotiations would build upon the momentum created by the agreement and lead to a more comprehensive settlement.
“We look forward to all parties engaging in the upcoming negotiations in a positive and constructive spirit, contributing to consolidating and building upon this progress,” he said.
He reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to supporting dialogue and peaceful solutions to international disputes.
“We affirm that the State of Qatar will always remain a steadfast supporter of these efforts and of all that promotes security and stability at the regional and international levels through dialogue and peaceful means.”
Support Extends Beyond the Middle East
The agreement also drew praise from leaders outside the region.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro, whose relationship with President Trump has often been marked by political disagreements, welcomed the breakthrough and commended efforts aimed at reducing global tensions.
“I thank President Trump for his effort when it comes to the peace of humanity,” Petro said.
As Colombia currently holds the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council, Petro pledged his country’s support for ongoing diplomatic efforts.
“Colombia today holds the presidency of the United Nations Security Council and will contribute everything within its reach to support the peace effort between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” he added.
Global Attention Turns to Switzerland Signing Ceremony
With the formal signing ceremony scheduled for next week in Switzerland, attention is now shifting toward the next phase of negotiations.
The agreement establishes a framework for continued discussions on several major issues, including Iran’s nuclear program, sanctions relief, regional security arrangements, and long-term mechanisms for maintaining peace.
While significant challenges remain, Sunday’s international response underscored the widespread belief that the agreement represents one of the most important diplomatic breakthroughs in recent years.
For now, world leaders appear united in their hope that the deal will reduce tensions, safeguard global energy supplies, reopen critical shipping lanes, and create a foundation for a more stable and secure Middle East.
