PORT JERVIS – Patriotism and pride were major components of events that involved hundreds in Port Jervis on June 14, Flag Day.  The city’s 25th Soapbox Derby and annual Flag Day Celebration took place on Sussex Street on Sunday afternoon, combining an opening ceremony with tributes to both.

Orange County Legislator Tom Faggione introduced various officials and guests, including divisions of a combined parade that included the local Elk Lodge 645’s giant American flag, Broome Street Marching Band, and more than 80 Soap Box Derby racers of various ages competing in four derby classes.

Following the singing of the National Anthem by Emma Siegel and the Pledge of Allegiance, Port Jervis Mayor Dominic Cicalese spoke of the century-plus history of the nation’s annual Flag Day observance.

He issued a proclamation for the day, noting the 2026 celebration of America’s Flag Day and the nation’s 250th Anniversary.  The mayor’s proclamation recognized and supported these national celebrations in the City of Port Jervis and urged all to properly display flags throughout the city.

Cicalese also praised the hard work of city workers and Soap Box Derby volunteers in organizing and conducting the annual derby, now in its 25th year in Port Jervis.

Elk 645 Exalted Ruler Tina Everett paid tribute to the flag, noting allegiance to the flag as a requirement of every Elk member and observance of Flag Day to be mandatory by all Elk lodges annually.  Everett referenced presidential proclamations for Flag Day, and the significance and symbolism America’s flag has in the hearts and minds of millions of people.

“May we ever love and defend it,” Everett said.
