FITCHBURG — Fitchburg Public Library, in partnership with MassWildlife and its “Hooks & Books” program, is offering fishing kits for patrons to borrow, making it easier than ever for families and beginners to enjoy time outdoors.
MassWildlife’s Hooks & Books program introduces children and families to freshwater fishing through a combination of fishing instruction, nature education and literacy activities. The program encourages participants to discover local waterways while learning about fish, wildlife and outdoor recreation.
Five fishing kits are available through the library’s “Library of Things.” Each kit includes a rod and reel, tackle box, and an information packet with fishing tips and nearby fishing locations.
Kits are available to cardholders ages 15 and older and may be borrowed at the Circulation Desk for one week, with a limit of two kits per household.
A valid Massachusetts freshwater fishing license is required for anglers ages 15 and older outside of Free Freshwater Fishing Weekend, held annually in June, when no license is needed to fish in state waters.
For more information about fishing licenses, visit the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife website. For information on borrowing a fishing kit, contact Fitchburg Public Library at 978-829-1780 or visit the library’s website.
