Pet of the Week: Fitchburg mayor picks this week’s pet

I happened to be sitting next to Fitchburg Mayor Sam Squailia recently while I was perusing adoptable dogs to cover for this column.

As she is a well-known aficionado of canines, having led the effort to build the Fitchburg Dog Park, I asked her to select our “Pet of the Week.” She looked carefully at each and every dog’s face, which prompted a smile, and then reviewed them again. “Ruby,” she said. “It has to be Ruby because of the ears.”

As you can see, Ruby the dog definitely has inquisitive ears.

Currently at Sterling Animal Shelter, this black and white beauty is still a puppy at nine months. Her breed heritage is unknown — but we detected a touch of the terrier. Since July is fast coming up, and that month’s birthstone is ruby, we’re hoping Ruby the dog will find a home. After all, she received mayoral approval!
