FITCHBURG — The people behind Curious Escape Rooms are inviting the public to a big party they are hosting this week to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their entrepreneurial endeavor.

Owners Audrey and Jeremy Pendleton-Chow design all of the games at their 359 Main St. business that they launched with a Kickstarter campaign and officially opened in June of 2016. They are marking the decade milestone with a celebration on Thursday, June 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. that will feature live music from The Jazz Depot, a speech by Mayor Sam Squailia, and a ribbon cutting.
According to information in a press kit released ahead of the special occasion, Audrey has a background in set decoration from the film and television industry. With love of films, immersive experiences, and play, she and her husband learned on the job how to make creative missions for players with a mix of tangible, dexterous, high and low-tech, classic, and outside the box thinking clues.

Game intros use Audrey’s experience from dance and theater, and they also incorporate their studies of psychology and sociology in their puzzle designs. Their first game The Dollhouse was recognized by industry renowned reviewers and in July of 2017 they opened a 90s Video Store set.
“Because the 90s Video Store set was so popular, we made our first variation with no repeat puzzles and decked it out in 90s holiday decorations in December 2019 and opened up Holiday Staff Party at the 90s Video Store,” the couple shared. “It would go on to return nearly every year, excluding the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown time periods.”

Curious Escape Rooms reopened in July of 2021 after temporarily closing in March the past year due to the global pandemic and in October of 2022 they opened their next iteration, Monster’s Curse at the 90s Video Store, which would return every Halloween season.
“We waited to put up a lit-up sign until we could get the design that would be worth it,” the Pendleton-Chows said of the sign that went up out front almost two years ago, adding that on May 24 of this year they ran their 1,000th 90s Video Store team.
