Olympic gymnast Simone Biles almost died during a life-threatening health scare that landed her in the hospital, she revealed Saturday.
“I’m not one to normally share things like this because I value privacy in today’s age,” the seven-time gold medalist wrote in her Instagram stories. “But almost dying wasn’t on my bingo card earlier this week.”
Her husband, Jonathan Owens, was away training with the Indiana Colts, having signed with the team in March. The couple lives in Biles’s Texas hometown about 25 miles north of downtown Houston. Biles, 29, is the most decorated gymnast in history and is considered one of the greatest gymnasts of all time.
“I’ve been in bed resting this week,” Biles wrote. “I’ll explain sooner or later, but shoutout to my close circle who reached out, checked in, visited and/or sent flowers.”

Her initial photo of her wrist encased in plastic hospital bracelets on Saturday was followed by two shots of vibrant bouquets. The last in her four-photo story pictured herself under a quilt, flanked by her two snoozing dogs. She also tucked a screenshot of a heart rate monitor into the corner by way of assuring her public that she would be alright and captioned it, “I’ll be here.”
Just a week earlier the pair had gone to a St. Louis Cardinals game, where Owens lobbed the first pitch, according to Instagram photos Biles posted Friday.
In a previous Instagram story a day earlier, Biles posted a photo of a plate of scrambled eggs, toast and sausage that she captioned, “Breakfast in Bed. Just what the doctor ordered.”
Saturday’s post seemed to clarify the reason for the bed-bound breakfast, though Biles did not reveal details on what had happened.
