Amazon has taken the No. 1 spot on the Fortune 500 for the first time, ending Walmart’s 13-year hold on the top position in the annual ranking of America’s largest companies by revenue.

The Fortune 500 list, published Wednesday, ranked companies by revenue from the previous fiscal year. Amazon led the 2025 list with about $717 billion in revenue, edging past Walmart, which reported roughly $713 billion.

The change marks the first time since 2013 that Walmart has not held the top position.

Amazon’s climb reflects growth across several major parts of its business, including e-commerce, cloud computing, advertising and third-party seller services, according to the New York Post. While Walmart remains dominant in U.S. store-based retail, Amazon’s broader business mix helped push its total revenue above the Arkansas-based retailer.

UnitedHealth Group ranked third on the list with $448 billion in revenue. Apple followed with $416 billion, while Alphabet, Google’s parent company, rounded out the top five with $403 billion in fiscal 2025 revenue.

The ranking highlights the widening reach of Amazon’s business model beyond its original online retail operation. Its cloud division, advertising platform and marketplace services have become major revenue drivers alongside its consumer shopping business.

Walmart’s second-place finish still leaves it among the world’s largest retailers, but Amazon’s move into the top position signals a shift in the revenue leadership of the Fortune 500 toward a company built on digital commerce, cloud infrastructure and technology-driven services.

The annual list remains one of the most closely watched measures of corporate scale in the United States, tracking revenue rather than market value, profitability or workforce size.
