President Donald Trump said Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be a powerful Republican pairing for the 2028 presidential election, describing the two as personally compatible and politically difficult to defeat.

Trump made the remarks in a podcast interview with Miranda Devine that aired Wednesday, adding to growing speculation over who may seek the Republican nomination when his term ends.

“I would think that JD and Marco as a team would be very hard to beat,” Trump said. “It’s interesting, human thing, the human equation. So I watch them together, they get along great.”

Vance and Rubio are both viewed as potential 2028 contenders, though neither has formally entered the race. Both have also downplayed their political ambitions while continuing to serve in prominent roles inside the Trump administration.

Rubio recently drew attention after taking questions at the White House podium, where Republicans and some Democrats praised his performance. His appearance included jokes and a 1990s hip-hop reference while discussing Iran’s negotiating position.

Vance and Rubio have also appeared at White House briefings to defend the administration’s policies as officials face questions on several issues, including the increasingly unpopular war with Iran.

Trump has continued to raise succession questions even as the next presidential election remains more than two years away. His comments pointed to the possibility of Vance and Rubio joining forces rather than competing for the nomination.

No candidate has formally announced a campaign for the November 2028 presidential election. Still, early positioning has already begun in both parties. Democratic contenders are also jockeying for a potential run, with no clear standard-bearer yet emerging to succeed Trump.
