NEW PALTZ – The town and village boards in New Paltz Monday night voted to move a proposed government consolidation to the public hearing stage.

The proposal has been discussed periodically for some 10 years and now both boards have agreed on a joint consolidation agreement.

Consultant Scott Minkoff, director of the Benjamin Center at SUNY New Paltz, said that was just a first step in the potential approval process.

“You have multiple hearings, you can take input and you can amend the document prior to putting it up to a vote,” he said.

Residents of both the town and village would have the final say in the proposed consolidation.
