DEAR BONNIE: All my life I have been told that I have a soft heart. I think that was always the way it’s been however now I wonder if being sensitive is a gift or a curse? I am not so sure lately and it seems as though I am becoming more sensitive as I become older and my heartaches become more frequent. Thanks Janis
DEAR JANIS: I do know exactly what you mean by being sensitive and having a soft heart as that’s been me as well and I am sure so many of us. I know it’s hard being sensitive and sometimes getting labeled as over-sensitive, but I think it’s a blessing to others who know that we are a soft place to land when they need someone to talk to someone who shows compassion.
Finding the Light through a tender heart
There is a beautiful ancient art where broken pottery is mended with gold. Instead of hiding the cracks, the gold highlights them, making the vessel even more precious and beautiful than it was before it fell. Our spirits are very much the same. When life breaks our hearts, it feels as though we might never be whole again. But I want to share a gentle secret with you: it is often in those very moments of breaking that we are actually being prepared for a magnificent awakening.
To be spiritually strong doesn’t mean we have grown hard or cold. In fact, true spiritual strength is the ability to remain soft in a world that can sometimes feel very harsh. It is the courage to keep your heart wide open, even when you know how much it can ache.
When we experience deep pain or loss, something sacred happens. The walls we built to protect ourselves, the ones made of “shoulds” and “musts” — begin to crumble. In that vulnerability, we find a sweetness we never knew existed.
The Softening: Pain has a way of washing away the dust from our eyes. It humbles us and reminds us that we are all walking this path together. When your heart has been broken, you no longer look at others with judgment; you look at them with a deep, quiet love. You see their struggles because you have felt your own.
The Inner Glow: Think of your spirit like a lantern. Sometimes, the glass has to be cleaned by the tears we shed so the light inside can shine through more clearly. Your strength isn’t found in your ability to “tough it out,” but in your ability to stay kind, to stay hopeful, and to keep loving through it all.
Many of us fear the dark seasons of our lives, but I have learned that the darkness is simply the soil where our most beautiful realizations are planted. An awakening isn’t a loud, booming event; it’s a quiet, shimmering realization that you are held by a love that is much larger than any one circumstance.
When you emerge from the crucible of pain, you carry a new kind of “spiritual fragrance.” You become a safe harbor for others. Because you have sat in the shadows, you can hold a candle for someone else without fear. Your compassion becomes your superpower. You realize that every tear you cried was actually watering the garden of your soul, allowing seeds of empathy and grace to bloom in ways you never imagined.
If you are hurting right now, please be so very gentle with yourself. You aren’t failing; you are transforming. You are being “gold-mended.”
Spiritual strength is the soft whisper that says, “I will love again. I will trust again. I will find the beauty in this day.” It is the realization that your heart didn’t just break; it broke open. And in that opening, there is now infinite room for the light to pour in, and for your own beautiful light to pour out onto everyone you meet.
You are stronger than you know, not because you are invincible, but because you are brave enough to be tender. I can only do my work from a place of love and compassion because that’s what the Divine is all about. So stay strong knowing that you are not alone and maybe the sensitive, kind and loving person is just what the world needs at this moment in time because love always wins so keep being soft-hearted.
