Former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters is scheduled to be released from a Colorado prison Monday, ending roughly 20 months behind bars after Gov. Jared Polis commuted her sentence earlier this month, according to the Denver Post.
Peters, 70, had been held at La Vista Correctional Facility in Pueblo following seven criminal convictions tied to a 2021 breach of Mesa County’s election equipment. Her release comes about 30 months earlier than initially expected after Polis reduced her sentence in mid-May and ordered that she be released at the beginning of June.
The former county election official’s release comes nearly five years after she helped an election conspiracist secretly copy data from Mesa County’s secure election systems. Some of that information was later published by right-wing media, according to the Denver Post.
Peters’ legal team is continuing its effort to challenge the convictions that led to her imprisonment. Her attorneys have renewed efforts to overturn the case as she prepares to leave custody.
Peters did not appear before the parole board before her release, leaving the conditions of her supervision unclear. One of her attorneys, Peter Ticktin, told the Denver Post earlier this month that the parole board would determine those conditions after she left prison.
The Colorado Department of Corrections said Friday that Peters is being released under a parole agreement, though the document was not immediately available. The department’s parole information page was separately referenced in the report through a state corrections link.
Peters’ supporters gathered outside the prison last weekend, and a recent video clip of Peters from prison was shared in an X post.
The release marks a major development in the long-running Colorado election equipment case, though Peters’ appeal efforts remain ongoing.
