FITCHBURG — The Department of Public Works advises residents of the following work that will be done, weather permitting, during the week of June 1, 2026.

Road Construction

Monday to Sunday 12 a.m. to 12 p.m.

River Street Bridge: MassDOT’s contractor Northern Construction has implemented a detour on the River Street Bridge. All southbound traffic will follow the West Street detour. Northbound traffic will be maintained.

Newton Place: Newton Place from Main Street to Boulder Drive will be closed to traffic. Monday — Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. (expect road closures, traffic delays and/or detours).

Combination Sanitary Sewer/Storm Drain Separation Project

GVC will be performing new drainage installation on Mechanic Street, Circle Street, Main Street, Prospect Street & Marshall Street.  Parking near the construction zone will not be allowed.

Main Street Water Main Improvements

JA Polito will be performing the following work: Water main installation at the intersections of Main Street/Blossom Street, Main Street/Cushing Street, and Main Street/Day Street.  Service interruptions to abutting properties are not anticipated.

The Blossom Street intersection work will include a road shutdown and detours for Blossom Street on Monday and Tuesday, June 1 and 2nd.

The Cushing Street intersection work will include a road shutdown for Main Street and detours at Blossom Street and Putnam Street on Wednesday and Thursday, June 3 and 4th.

The Day Street intersection work will include a road shutdown and detours for Day Street on Thursday, June 4.

Water Street Bridge Replacement

MIG will be performing Installation of sewer on Main Street and Water Street.  The Water Street Bridge will be fully closed to traffic in both directions.  Both northbound and southbound travel over the bridge will be impassable during this phase. Traffic will be detoured to use alternate routes, including:

Putnam Street

Cetrino Memorial Drive / Bridge area for access to Downtown from Water Street.

Airport Road

Lazaro Paving will be paving driveway aprons, and weather permitting, will begin line painting.

Pipeline Replacement

Unitil and its subcontractors Neuco and Path Mechanical will be conducting natural gas pipeline upgrade projects on Blossom Street from Main Street to Ross Street; Main Street from Wallace Ave to Blossom Street and the following streets: Middle Street, Railroad Street, Water Street Lane, 2nd Street, 3rd Street, 4th Street, Granite Street, Salem Street, Spruce Street, Hale Street, Lynn Street, and Beekman Street.

Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Minor traffic impacts

Pothole repairs, citywide. Stormwater maintenance to prevent flooding from blocked catch basins. Repair water gate boxes at various locations throughout the city. Various repairs of the existing drainage infrastructure.

Library Renovation Project

Newton Place from the Expresso Pizza entrance to Boulder Drive will be closed on Wednesday, June 3rd.

Water Main Work

Installation of a water main on Litchfield Street between Beech Street and King Street please expect delays and/or detours on Litchfield Street.

Hydrant replacement Wednesday, June 3rd on Lunenburg Street at Highland Ave with southbound lane closure at this area, please expect delays.

Hydrants, city-wide — inspecting hydrants for any plow/winter damage.

Hydrant flushing on the Oak Hill System (hydrants with Green tops) in the Franklin Road, Oak Hill Road, Shea Street Lee Ave, Pepper Road and Sarah Road areas to include all side/intersecting streets.

Street Sweeping has been completed in all wards.  In the event a street has been missed, we respectfully request constituents report it using SeeClickFix.
