Communities throughout the United States are holding Memorial Day observances honoring military personnel who lost their lives in service to the country, with ceremonies ranging from national events in Washington, D.C., to local gatherings in towns and cities nationwide.

President Donald Trump is scheduled to participate Monday in the annual wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, one of the country’s most recognized Memorial Day traditions.

The White House issued a Memorial Day proclamation Friday calling on Americans to remember those who died defending the nation and to participate in national moments of reflection and prayer throughout the holiday.

In the proclamation, Trump stated that “the greatest fighting force the world has ever known is built upon the extraordinary service of selfless men and women who safeguard our liberty and preserve our way of life.”

The president formally declared May 25, 2026, a “day of prayer for permanent peace” and encouraged Americans to observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time. The proclamation also designated the hour beginning at 11 a.m. as a national period of prayer honoring fallen service members.

In Washington, thousands of spectators are expected to gather for the annual National Memorial Day Parade, while the National Memorial Day Concert on the West Lawn of the United States Capitol is scheduled to feature musical performances and tributes recognizing military families and Americans killed in combat.

Across the country, local governments, veterans groups, and military organizations are organizing remembrance ceremonies that include wreath presentations, moments of silence, memorial speeches, flag placements, and military flyovers.

In New York City, Fleet Week celebrations continue through the holiday, bringing Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard vessels into port while giving civilians opportunities to meet service members and tour military ships.

Chicago is preparing for one of the nation’s largest Memorial Day parades, while additional ceremonies and patriotic events are planned throughout Texas, Florida, California, and other states.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is also conducting Memorial Day observances at more than 120 VA national cemeteries this weekend. Officials said the events are intended to honor fallen military personnel and encourage Americans to reflect on the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces.

Veterans advocacy groups are using the holiday weekend not only to commemorate the dead, but also to draw attention to ongoing issues affecting veterans, including homelessness, mental health concerns, and access to healthcare services.

Travel activity is also expected to rise sharply during the Memorial Day weekend. According to projections from AAA, millions of Americans are anticipated to travel during the holiday period, with many families planning visits to cemeteries, memorials, monuments, and patriotic landmarks as part of Memorial Day observances.

The holiday, observed annually on the last Monday in May, remains dedicated to honoring members of the U.S. military who died while serving the country in war and military operations.
