NEWBURGH – The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York has awarded the City of Newburgh the 2026 Engineering Excellence Award for its engineering design and infrastructure improvement on its North Interception improvement project.

The project increased the capacity of the city’s nearly two-mike north interceptor sewer, improved the collection and treatment of wet-weather flows and advanced the city’s federally approved long term sewer system control plan to reduce combined sewer overflows into the Hudson River.

Federal and state funding provided much of the funding for the $43 million project with minimal cost to city taxpayers, Newburgh officials said.

The project included the installation of some 8,600 linear feet of new interceptor sewer through the city’s riverfront and historic districts using a micro-tunneling technique that reduces disruptions for residents and expedited restoration in the historic district areas.
