Captain Ed Gallrein, a retired military officer endorsed by President Donald Trump, has defeated incumbent Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) in the closely watched Republican primary election for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District.
According to results reported by the Associated Press, Gallrein secured 45,623 votes, representing 54.4 percent of the total vote. Massie received 38,245 votes, accounting for 45.6 percent. The Associated Press officially called the race at 7:54 p.m., confirming Gallrein’s victory in what had become a high-profile contest within the Republican Party.
Polls Foreshadowed Tight Race
In the days leading up to the election, polling suggested a competitive battle between the two candidates. A Quantus Insights survey conducted May 11–12 among 908 likely Republican voters showed Gallrein leading with 48.3 percent support, compared to 43.1 percent for Massie. The polling indicated momentum for the challenger, though the margin remained within striking distance until Election Day.
Trump’s Strong Backing
President Donald Trump played a prominent role in boosting Gallrein’s campaign. Over several months, Trump publicly endorsed Gallrein and sharply criticized Massie. In a January post on Truth Social, Trump described Gallrein as a “winner” and an “American Hero,” while expressing dissatisfaction with Massie’s record in Congress.
In his statement, Trump praised Gallrein’s background as a Navy SEAL, Army Ranger, and fifth-generation Kentucky farmer, calling him “a true Patriot” who would help advance the “Make America Great Again” agenda. Trump framed the race as an opportunity for voters in Kentucky’s 4th District to align more closely with his leadership and priorities.
Campaign Support and Policy Divisions
Gallrein also received campaign support from Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, who appeared at events alongside the candidate. Hegseth emphasized themes of loyalty, teamwork, and unity, arguing that Gallrein’s military experience prepared him to stand firmly behind party leadership.
“President Trump needs reinforcements, and that’s what war fighters do,” Hegseth said during a campaign appearance. He added that military service instills discipline and an understanding of mission objectives, qualities he attributed to Gallrein.
Massie, who has represented Kentucky’s 4th District for years, had at times found himself at odds with Trump on several issues. Reports noted disagreements related to foreign policy matters, including conflict with Iran, as well as debates over the handling of documents connected to the Epstein case. Those policy differences became a focal point in the campaign, highlighting divisions within the party over strategy and direction.
A Shift in Representation
Gallrein’s victory marks a significant shift in representation for Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District. The outcome underscores the continued influence of Trump within Republican primaries and reflects the impact of endorsements and national political dynamics on local races.
With the primary decided, attention now turns to the general election, where Gallrein will seek to secure the seat and formally represent Kentucky’s 4th District in Congress.
