On day 14 we traveled overnight from the Dawes Glacier to Ketchikan Alaska. We arrived at Port around 2 p.m. but I started seeing Civilization along the shoreline about an hour out and it was dotted with houses I would love to own because of the setting. But surprisingly I spotted a Walmart in the middle of what looks to be a pristine village.
But outside of the tourist area it looked like any other small town where houses were packed closely together. They were constructed as far up the mountains that they can build. It’s the most population that I’ve seen since we left Vancouver. Ketchikan is mostly what looks like a tourist trap where most of the massive cruise ships dock.
I went down to the shopping area to where they sell totem poles and I did a selfie with them behind me to mark the occasion where my feet touched an Alaskan sidewalk but that wasn’t enough. I found a patch of land outside of the US parks service Discovery Center in the downtown area so I can now say I’ve truly set foot on Alaskan soil.
I got back on board the Disney Magic and because everybody was on shore the whole ship was eerily abandoned. There was no one around and was kind of nice to see that. I sat at a porthole window just looking at the trees as a light mist was falling over the area and I was thinking about how grateful I am to be on this trip. We will be making our way to Vancouver for the last leg of the cruise.
