FITCHBURG — The city placed in the National Recreation and Park Association’s (NRPA) 2026 Recycling Race, earning gold and silver Recycling Ranger badges.

Fitchburg came in first place in the cleanup category with 15,030 lbs. of litter collected this spring and landed in second place in the most agents of discovery missions completed category, with five missions played.

City of Fitchburg Parks and Recreation Director James Bunnell, who has been in his role for four years, said the inspiration behind entering the race comes from his own experience working with people who care as much about the city as he does.

“The city does a tremendous job with the ward cleanups and so many groups reach out to help clean up the parks, I thought it was only fitting to enter and see how we stack up against the rest of the country,” he said.

The NRPA recognition reflects the commitment of local officials and community members who help make recycling and picking up trash a priority across city parks and facilities not only during Earth Month in April, but year-round.

“It takes everyone to keep our city and green spaces beautiful,” Bunnell said. “When officials and neighbors team up to clean and recycle, it builds a stronger sense of community. It proves that when we pitch in together, we can make a massive, visible difference right in our own backyards.”
